Delta News and Information

Delta Learning Center

Senior Recognition Ceremony
Tuesday, May 19th

The 2015 Delta/Summit St. Baldricks event was a major success. This year the school sponsored Mason Wilson, a little boy fighting leukemia, and who also has Down-Syndrome. Delta/Summit was able to raise over $7,000 for childhood cancer research, and write a $500 check to Gigis Playhouse, a foundation serving children and adults of all ages, each Playhouse provides educational and therapeutic programs at no charge to families; and in a format that individuals with Down syndrome learn best. It was truly a wonderful year. Many areas of the school chipped into help including the schools sewing club who made pillowcases and sold them to raise money. The sewing club also donated pillow cases to the hospital where Mason is being treated for the children to have and enjoy. It was a very special year!

Cooking Demonstration

Robert Morris culinary arts program came to Delta/Summit for a presentation on Tuesday, 24th. The students were taught about what a culinary arts program offers, where you can work when you finish the program, and were involved with an actual cooking demonstration. It was a great experience for the students!

Delta/Summit Raise Racing Pigeons

Image

This year Delta/Summit is developing a racing pigeon program, where students will take part in the day to day operations of breeding, raising and racing pigeons. We believe that programs like this play an important role in developing the whole child. We know that this program will help keep our students off the streets and out of trouble. The pigeon program is by far the most popular after school program this semester.

Our pigeon program will provide our students the opportunity to expand on their higher level thinking skills, while providing valuable hands on experiences that involve racing pigeons. This program will be goal-oriented and will build on the unique bond between animals and humans. While participating in the project students will enhance their understanding of mathematics, U.S. history, technology, geography, and science. One of the goals of this program is to provide excitement and gratification while improving on life skills and academic skills.

During the program students will help construct the inside of the loft. They will also raise young pigeons from an egg and eventually race their very own pigeon. All the feeding and medications that are administered to the pigeons will be done by the students.
